Relationship Counselling Services

Relationship Counselling Services in Johannesburg & Online

Relationship counselling or therapy which includes couples therapy or counselling aims to create a safe environment in which to discuss issues that, when couples or those in relationships handle only by themselves, can too easily descend into misunderstanding or arguments. In the consulting room, everyone can safely have their say, can feel acknowledged, and as a result, progress can be made. As the term suggests, it is available to anyone in relationships with other humans whether that be an intimate partner relationship, ‘couple’ or those in different forms of relationship configurations, such as polyamory.

A common fear before going to relationship or couples counselling is that your therapist may take the side of the other person in the relationship. There is no need to worry about this, as I do not take sides. I have one responsibility; and that is to the relationship itself.

I provide a neutral safe space and use my skills to carefully feedback the dynamics that I observe and experience within the session and guide clients to a mutually respectful understanding of each other’s experience.

What To Expect From Relationship Counselling

You do not need to bring anything to your first session of relationship counselling, nor do you need to prepare in any formal way. Many couples or those in relationships like to spend some time thinking about why they are going to counselling, and what issues they might want to discuss whilst there, but this is not essential.

It is important to remember that this is a gradual process; it will take time for you both to ‘open up’ fully and some effort will be required to ensure that the sessions are helpful to you. Patience and perseverance are key requirements for making sure that relationship counselling is effective and useful.
